Church of Singapore started with about 100 members from a diversity of backgrounds (Baptists, Anglicans, Methodists, Brethren and members from the Christian Assembly at Wilkie Terrace). A quarter were elderly people above 50 years old. The rest were students and young people. The first congregation comprised mainly artisans, barbers, photographers, some businessmen with a few professionals.

COS’s first meeting place was at the residence of the late Bro Goh Ewe Kheng – No 8 Siglap Plain. The Services were conducted in Hokkien with Mandarin interpretation. On Saturdays, the youth service was held in Bro Sai Ying Kong’s terrace house at Calf Road. Sunday School was held before the main service. Two years after the commencement of COS, English replaced Hokkien in the main service as more of the congregation were English-educated

In the Early 70′s, COS became the sole tenant of 145 Marine Parade. As God gave the increase in members, COS leadership felt the need to have a home of her own (instead of renting) to accommodate the growing congregation. For several years COS looked for suitable property to purchase a piece of land to build a Church Building.

The owner of 145 Marine Parade had repeatedly refused to sell the land to us. Praise the Lord! In 1988, God performed a miracle for us – the owner changed his mind and sold us 145 Marine Parade! What a wonderful day of rejoicing that was for the COS family.

The purchase of the land was completed by the end of 1988, and building construction began almost immediately. By March 1992, the new church building was fully completed.

On 6.6.1992, COS launched the official opening and held a building dedication service unto the Lord. All Glory to the Lord!
